We often crave for food that would boost our energy, and we often submit to that crave by reaching for an energy bar or a power shake, or resorting to coffee and chocolate for that caffeine fix.

However, Ayurvedic practitioners claim that the best power foods are actually fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and whole grains. These foods are rich in "chetna," the healing and nurturing influence of nature. Here are the particulars when it comes to eating healthy and with full of energy.

Power grains

Carbohydrates have long been regarded for long-term endurance and energy. However, not all carbs are created alike. For instance, a croissant is high in fat and low in nutrition. 

Boost your energy with the help of whole grains. These have also been found to lower cholesterol levels in the body, inhibit cancer-causing activities, prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines, and lower blood sugar. Examples of whole grains include rye, quinoa, amaranth, and millet.

Energy fruits and veggies

Fresh vegetables should constitute 40% of every meal. You should frequently eat green leafy veggies that are high in minerals and fiber. Fruits are also healthy snacks. For instance, you can start the day with a stewed apple and do away with coffee. 

If you feel hungry in between meals, try snacking on a whole pear. If you feel bloated after lunch, eat a fresh slice of papaya. Also, raisins are considered the best of fruits. They enhance the purity (sattva) of the body, as well as pacifying the mind and heart.

Avoid energy-draining foods

Just as there are foods that provide energy, there are those that also drain the energy from you. Examples of these are fast food, canned or packaged foods, frozen foods, leftovers, and foods with preservatives, chemicals and additives. They are difficult to digest and contain little nutritional content. 

Eating such foods can actually make you feel dull, sluggish, and drained of energy every day; not to mention clogging your microchannels with toxins. When eating these types of food, drink half a glass of room temperature water with ¼ of fresh lime squeezed into it.

Spice adds fire

Adding spices into your food is an easy way to increase the value of chetna. Try sautéing cumin, coriander, fennel, and turmeric, in clarified butter. You can add vegetables or cooked grains for that fulfilling meal, or add these spices to your drinking water for an energy-boosting concoction.
