Surviving The Back To School Blues

The end of the school break can evoke many emotions. Your child is feeling excited and anxious at facing a new school year with new classmates and new teachers. For parents its what they’ve been waiting for all summer when their children can get out of the house for 8 hours. Make the transition for your children easier and lessen the anxiety they are feeling. Here are some tips for you to help your children get over the back to school blues.

Be confident about the coming school year. Seeing you be positive will help ease any anxieties your child maybe feeling.

Start training your child to wake up earlier a few weeks before the start of classes. Summer vacation has often changed children’s sleeping habits. It’s time to change those sleeping habits back to school mode.

If your child is going to a new school go with him or her just to get a feel for the place. Having you there as a familiar presence will help your child overcome his fears about a new school.

Be there for your child at the end of the work day. Don’t bring home your work concerns and focus on listening to your child. Listening and talking every dinnertime will help you gauge if your child is adjusting well to his new environment.

Always say good bye to your child. Never make fun of your child if he cries. For adoloscents don’t make the good byes longer than necessary. You remember when your mother embarrased you in front of your friends. You don’t want that to happen to your teenager.

Encourage your child to find a friend that he can walk to school or ride the bus with every morning.

The night before the first day of school help your child organize his backpack. Use all of the compartments. Pack heavier items to the center of the back.

Make sure your child has already picked out the outfit he will wear on the first day of school the night before. This will save you from the hassle to looking for a lost blue sock when you are running late.

Pack the lunches the night before. Make sure they are well balanced with a fruit for dessert. Eating right can make your child do better in school.

Clean out your child’s closet before the school starts. Organize the closet for easy access. Place the school clothes on one side.

Create a space where your child can do his homework in peace. Make sure this space is free from distractions especially from the television.

Don’t forget to arrange the transportation for your child before school starts. Are you going to be using the bus or a car pool or will your child be walking to school. Check the bus schedule if your child will be taking the bus. You don’t want to be late the first day of classes.

Label the things that your child will be taking to school.
