How to Prevent Infections

An infection is a disease caused by germs that get in your body and make you sick. You get germs through different ways: from another person who sneezed, coughed, or has touched you; through the germs floating around the air; through germ-prone items like money, toilet, door handles, or even your pet; and even through blood and other body fluids.

There are many simple ways that you can do to prevent infection. These tips can help you keep from spreading an infection to others.

It is the most important thing you can do to prevent infection. Wash your hands several times a day, especially after you have been to the bathroom, before eating or preparing food, and every time you cough, sneeze, or blow your nose.

Soap and water cannot kills germs, but they loosen the normal skin oil where germs live. Make sure that you wash for at least 10 seconds, scrub your fingernails, rinse your hands very well, and dry your hands thoroughly.

Shower often and make sure to wash between the folds of your skins. You may also need to bathe every one to two days to keep your body from smelling or getting an infection.

Also, wash your hair regularly and clean areas where germs thrive often such as between your legs and your armpits. Wear a deodorant to keep from having a bad smell.

Nail trimming

Trim your fingernails and toenails once a week. Do this after a bath or shower as the nails tend to be softer.

Dental care

Infections in your mouth can be caused by food left on or between your teeth. Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day. It is best to do this in the morning and before bed. Gargle with mouthwash if you cannot brush after a meal.

Also, floss your teeth each time you brush to remove food from between your teeth. If you have dentures, change the water in your denture cup every day.

It is important to see your dentist at least once a year. Dentists can give your teeth a deeper cleaning than you can, preventing cavities and infections in your mouth.

Clean your house thoroughly. Dust and vacuum your house every week. Mop the kitchen and bathroom floor weekly and when something is spilled.

Wash trash containers with soap and water, then spray it with a disinfectant. Keep the inside of the refrigerator clean, throwing away spoiled food.

Wash cutting board with soap especially after putting raw meat on it. Use a cleaning product to clean the kitchen counter.
