Recognizing Signs and Symptoms of Stress

What is stress?

Our daily routine can put a strain on both our bodies and minds. Stress, this is something that disturbs our personal balance causing adverse or at times positives effects on our physical, emotional, and mental. With just the right amount, stress can keep us energetic and focused, however, too much of it, which is often the case, can result to physical pain, distressed piece of mind, anxiety, and depression among others. 

Although, there are apparent benefits from stress, the problem is that the more frequent we become stressed, the harder it is to go back to normal behaviors. So, instead of returning to an equilibrium state, you remain in a heightened state longer causing strain on the body increasing risks of various diseases like heart diseases, obesity, anxiety, and depression problems.

Symptoms or signs of stress can be subdivided into four categories. These are physical, cognitive or mental, emotional, and behavioral.

Physical symptoms of stress

For the physical category, the effects of stress can be a little obvious. Too much pressure from work, home, or the rigor of your daily life can result to:

  • rapid heart palpitations or throbbing
  • skin irritation or rashes
  • pain and tightness in the chest
  • fainting
  • indigestion, constipation, or other digestive problems
  • frequent colds and flu
  • shortness of breath
  • past illnesses began to resurface
  • stomach cramps
  • fatigue
  • insomia
  • headaches
  • rapid weight gain or loss
  • muscle twitches
  • vague aches and pains in different parts of the body
  • changes on their menstrual pattern (for women)

Emotional symptoms of stress

Emotional symptoms of stress, on the other hand, can include:

  • moodiness
  • restlessness
  • short temper
  • anxiety
  • excessive worrying
  • depression
  • sadness
  • job dissatisfaction
  • feeling insecure
  • felling confused
  • burnout
  • forgetfulness
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • sense of loneliness or isolation
  • resentment
  • feelings of guilt

Cognitive symptoms of stress

Meanwhile, there are also some cognitive problems associated with stress if individuals are subjected to too many tasks. Soon their mind will have to be calmed down before symptoms like the following begin to manifest.

  • memory problems
  • indecisiveness
  • cannot concentrate well and easily distracted
  • cannot think clearly
  • have poor judgment
  • racing thoughts
  • loss of objectivity
  • fearful anticipation
  • always sees the negative aspects of things

Behavioral symptoms of stress

And finally, we have the behavioral symptoms which can be clear indications of stress. If you observe someone has been:

  • eating more or less lately
  • trouble sleeping
  • keeps to himself lately
  • procrastination
  • neglects responsibilities
  • becomes more accident prone
  • started or increased consumption of alcohol, cigarettes or drugs
  • nervous habits began to surface
  • too busy to relax
  • overreacting to unexpected problems
  • overdoing some activities
  • picking fights
  • has poor time management
  • impaired speech.
