Skin Rashes and Dermatitis

A skin rash is a condition where there is a noticeable change in the skin’s appearance, color and texture. Most types of skin rashes usually exhibit small red and itchy bumps in the skin although it can also show itself in other ways.

Some skin rashes show themselves as blisters, cracked or scaly skin, and may swell or become painful. Diagnoses and treatment of skin rashes in an individual will depend on the signs that they display as well as the underlying cause of their sudden appearance.

A skin rash may also be a symptom of certain diseases. They may also be associated with the environment where an individual may be exposed to a host of different irritants that may affect the skin. Skin rashes may also appear as the body’s reaction to certain allergens such as those found in food, medicines, insect stings as well as substances coming in direct contact with the skin.

One of the most common of skin rashes that can affect a lot of people is eczema. Eczema is actually a general term for a skin condition where the skin is inflamed, dry and becomes red and itchy.

Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is considered as one of the most common forms of eczema. This skin condition is usually a childhood skin problem that can be inherited from generation to generation. It is characterized by chapped and scaly skin patches on the scalp, legs, arms and torso area. Atopic dermatitis may come and go and sometimes for no obvious reason. It is not a contagious condition.

Contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is another skin condition that refers to a rash brought about by a substance that comes into contact with the skin and causes an allergic reaction. Contact dermatitis may only cause rashes to appear in areas of the skin touched by the substance that caused the allergic reaction. This type of skin rash can usually be treated but cannot be prevented.

It is a long lasting skin disease that is characterized by inflammation and scaling. Scaling of the skin occurs when the outer layer of skin cells reproduce faster than usual and begin to pile up on the skin surface. This condition usually affects the skin areas near the elbows, knees and elsewhere.

Others type of skin rashes

There are also types of skin rashes that are caused by fungal and bacterial infections. In the case of skin rashes caused by fungus infections, ringworm may come to mind. This type of skin rash is characterized generally by distinctive round spots that form on some areas of the skin infected by the fungi. It is caused by dermatophytes or skin fungi.

Dermatophytes thrive on the dead layer of skin and rarely go deeper that the top layer of the skin. Dermatophytes thrive in areas with heat and moisture, that is why they can usually be found in skin folds such as those in the groin or in between the toes.
