Different Kinds of Weight Training

To the naked eye, all weight training look the same. Everybody uses the same weights, more or less do the same reps, and follow practically the same routine.

However, there is a web of difference between the different kinds of weight training. The athletes themselves who undergo extensive workouts know what sets apart bodybuilders from weightlifters and from those who do weight training for conditioning purposes.

There are three kinds of competitive weight training designed for specific weight-related sports. These are bodybuilding, powerlifting, and Olympic weightlifting. Somewhat on the extreme side are the Strongman competitions, while on the other end of the spectrum is weight training for physical fitness.


Bodybuilding as a sport is much like a fashion show for muscles. A bodybuilder’s physique is characterized by extremely low levels of body fat.

Bodybuilders use an extensive range of exercises because they need to develop even the smaller muscles to enhance body features. They concentrate on muscle development rather than on sheer physical strength.

They do not cross-train with other weight training programs, but they are most adept with health and nutrition. This is essential for them to achieve a low percentage of body fat.


Powerlifting competitions determine who can lift the heaviest weights in three divisions: the deadlift, the bench press, and the squat. Although both powerlifting and weightlifting involve skills of endurance and strength, they are still different from each other.

Olympic weightlifting

Olympic weightlifters perform lifts in two competitions: the clean and jerk and the snatch. This is very technical since it involves timing and balance.

Unlike bodybuilders, competitive weightlifters carry more body fat. This proves to be advantageous for the sport.

Strongman competitions

Strongman is like the X-Games of weightlifting. This involves a variety of skill from carrying atlas stones, car chassis, wheel turning, and what other heavy contraptions they could think of. Height and weight play a role in some events and may be to the competitor’s benefit or disadvantage.

Weight training for physical fitness

This is where most people fall into. People undergo weight training to improve health, fitness and appearance, and for conditioning for sports competition. Weight training is also helpful for disease management in illnesses like type-two diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, and heart and lung problems.
