Pain During Pregnancy

Pregnancy causes a lot of pain and discomfort. Some occur in the early stages, while others happen when you get closer to delivery. Other discomforts appear early, go away, then return later.

Most pregnancy pains are normal. Here are ways to prevent or remedy some pregnancy aches and pains.

Changes in breast size

Breasts undergo a lot of changes during pregnancy. To alleviate discomfort, make some adjustments like wearing a bigger size or trying out maternity or nursing bras. Wear a bra during the day and night to maintain support.


Get lots of rest by sleeping early and taking naps during the day. Pace activities and exercise everyday to increase energy level. If fatigue is cause by anemia, consult your doctor.

Nausea, dizziness, and headaches

Morning sickness can be prevented by eating dry food before getting out of bed or by eating a high-protein meal the night before. Eat small snacks instead of big meals and sip a lot of fluids like clear fruit juice. For headaches, relax and try to release tension. Move around slowly when staying in one position for a long time. Consult your physician if both nausea and headaches occur at the same time or are becoming too severe.

Constipation and indigestion

Add more fiber to your diet. Avoid straining when having a bowel movement. Chew food slowly. Drink warm liquids. Do not mix fatty food with sweets in one meal and separate liquids and solids at meals.

Bleeding and swollen gums

Increased blood circulation and release of certain hormones may cause swelling and bleeding of gums. Just make sure to take proper care of your teeth and gums by brushing and flossing regularly.

Hemorrhoids, leg cramps, varicose veins, and common body aches

Solutions are similar to constipation and dizziness like slowly shifting positions and avoiding straining when making a bowel movement. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing. Avoid lying on your back and preferably sleep on your side. Use pillows to support your body. Massage the cramp and apply hot compress on the swollen areas. Gently stretch your legs and do simple exercises. Maintain good posture. A low backache going around your stomach that does not go away might mean a premature labor. Contact your obstetrician if this happens.

Sleeping difficulty

Drink warm milk and take a warm shower before bedtime. Use extra pillows for support and lie on your side.

Nasal congestion

Apply a warm, wet cloth on your cheeks, eyes, and nose to reduce congestion. Do not use sprays and drink plenty of fluids. Elevate your head with a pillow when sleeping.

Frequent urination and vaginal discharge

Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes. If urine stings, get advise from your health care provider. Use cotton underwear or those made from natural fibers. Do not douche. Wipe from back to front and clean the vaginal area using soap and warm water.

Stretch marks

Take Vitamins C and E and apply lotion to your skin to keep it soft.

Braxton-Hicks Contractions

These occur when muscles in the uterus tighten. It is also called false labor pains. Just remember to relax and change positions.
