Natural Ways to Stay Young

meditationGetting older scares many people who equate aging with loss of youth, health and beauty. Many people go under the knife to lift their sagging boobs or laser surgery treatment to reduce facial wrinkles.

Others are embarking on a voyage to find the Fountain of Youth that will keep them looking and feeling young forever. But you don’t need these drastic measures to stay fabulously young. All you have to do is to exercise, eat healthy foods, and de-stress.

Regular exercise keeps your body healthy. It helps you burn calories, build healthier bones, tone muscles, and boost mood. What’s more, regular exercise can also help you have a better brain power.

According to Gary Small, MD, UCLA Center on Aging director, "Walking for just 10 minutes a day lowers your risk of Alzheimer’s by 40 percent." Three 20-minute workouts every week can help you achieve a healthy body and a healthy mind. You can walk, run, swim, bike, dance, or whatever activity you enjoy most.

Consume good fats

You can slow down the aging process by consuming healthy kind of fats such as omega-3 fatty acids, which you can find in seeds, tuna and salmon, and walnuts.

Omega-3 helps maintain bone strength and stabilize your mood. It also helps reduce inflammation in the body, preventing early signs of aging.

Nutritionists recommend that you eat plenty of fish rich in omega-3 like wild salmon. If you don’t get the recommended omega-3s from your diet, you can take fish-oil supplements.

Stress fasttracks aging. One of the most effective ways to de-stress is meditation. You can do this for 10-20 minutes once or twice everyday.

Here’s what you should do: Find a quiet spot. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, gently roll your shoulders, neck, and head, and breathe deeply. Make sure that you relax your muscles. Say and repeat your mantra (it could be a word, a phrase, or a sound) every time you exhale.

When you’re finished, keep your eyes closed for a minute; gently allow daily thoughts to enter your mind. You can also practice yoga twice a week for the energy boost you need. In addition to being a de-stressing activity, yoga can also help build bone mass.

Feel the love

In addition to actively engaging in physical activities, eating healthy foods, and meditation, you also need to feel all the love surrounding you. This will make you feel and look beautifully young.

People who have fallen in love or found an activity that makes them excited to get up every morning know well that passion is a very powerful drug. Passion is "the central motivation of all human activity," says Gail Sheehy in her book, "Sex and the Seasoned Woman".

You need to embrace life with a smile as it boosts your self-esteem, improves cardiovascular health, and energizes your immune system. A passionate sex can be especially beneficial. According to Mehmet Oz, MD, professor of surgery at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University, "Loving touches release hormones, including oxytocin that reduces stress and anxiety."

Here’s what you need to do to have that youthful glow: Keep the passion alive with your partner. Always have a good time together. You can also engage in something that you really love like painting or joining a book club. Do whatever you think that will make you feel energized and youthful.
