Sports Massage Techniques

Athletes need to have their bodies prepared for optimal performance during competitions. They also need to have their bodies functioning perfectly during training and of course, recover after competing. A sports massage helps athletes in these situations.

But it’s not only athletes who benefit from sports massages. Sports massages are also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or limited range of motion. This is the type of massage that you get in a spa.

What Happens During Sports Massage?

A sports massage is a Swedish massage. It stimulates blood and lymph fluids. Some types of sport massage movements use trigger point therapy to loosen up or break down knotted muscles. They also increase the range of motion.

There are four types of sports massages:

  • Pre-event sports massage – as the name suggests, it is done before competitions. Pre-event sport massages are short and stimulating. They last only about 15-45 minutes. The massage is directed on the part of the body that will be used during the competition.
  • Post-event sports massage – given within an hour or two of the event. The purpose is to normalize body tissues.
  • Restorative sports massage – they are given during trainings. They allow athletes to train harder and with less injury.
  • Rehabilitative sports massage – given after sporting events. The purpose of rehabilitative sports massage is to alleviate pain due to injury and to help the body return to health.

When Should I Get A Sports Massage At The Spa?

Non-athletes also get sports massages for specific reasons. For instance when they have a tender knee from running. But, you should consult your movement therapist to identify and correct the movement pattern that might be causing your injury in the first place.

Your therapist would generally focus on the area that’s damaged or hurt, for example, pulled hamstring, etc., instead of giving a full body massage.

Even if you do not have an injury, you can get a sports massage. When going to spas, men get the sports massage because to them it sounds manlier.

But, whatever type of massage you want to get, your therapist should ask you about what you need and what are your expectations for the massage.
