Ways to Enjoy Your Maternity Leave

Most of us mothers-to-be tend to fill our imaginations with pretty pictures of us enjoying our time – blissfully – with our baby. In reality though, there are a lot of things we have to take into consideration – especially if for first time moms – such as packing baby bags and basically a lot of what-to-dos. To enjoy your maternity leave and your time with baby, here are some things you could do:

Arrange at least three weeks of help in advance

Ask for help to your mom or relatives and friends who are parents too. Know what particular form of help you can receive from each. Basically, play to each person’s strengths.

For instance, your mom may be good with child care, changing diapers and what not. A relative may be good at housekeeping, another at cooking. Prearranging help gives you more time to rest, and make you feel more energized and ready to enjoy motherhood.

Accept that for about six weeks of your maternity leave, you may be virtually useless

You are on maternity leave – not on vacation leave. Don’t expect to be able to use your time planning weekend getaways or dinners with your gal pals.

The first few weeks with a newborn are a life-changing event – and everyone is adjusting to it. You’re adjusting to being a 24-hour mom, your husband to being a dad, and your baby to living outside your womb. So don’t pressure yourself to be social or productive. This is a time to take a well-deserved rest.

Make new mommy friends before you give birth

Brand-new parenthood can be lonely; especially after all the help you’ve enlisted have departed and you are left alone to care for your newborn. So if you see another pregnant woman, strike up a conversation.

Share tips and ideas on giving birth, caring for and raising a child, and basically make a new friend. Remember, moms come in all types and styles – your ideas might clash – so tread carefully. Also, know where new moms and moms-to-be usually hang-out.

Scope around your neighborhood

You deserve a break – at least once a day, just to clear your head. Find out where other moms hang out, where the best playgrounds and child-friendly places are. You’ll be surprised at the kind of interaction you can enjoy when you discover these places.

Practice makes perfect

Don’t be afraid of baby carriers, especially the many straps and buckles. All of them are put there are for a reason – to keep your baby safely in place.

If you are afraid of hurting your baby, try out the gear before you have your baby. That way, you’ll be used to it by the time your baby comes.

Get the right diaper bag

Don’t settle for a diaper bag just because it’s cute or because the celebs have it. Be practical. Keep in minds of all the things you have to put in: diapers, wipes, a change of clothing for baby, bottles (if you’re not breastfeeding), burp cloths, a diaper changing pad, your wallet, keys, and your cell phone to name a few. Shop around and compare before settling down with one.

Don’t forget your entertainment supply

Your baby is sleeping soundly and you’ve got nothing to do. At times like this, you have to have some entertainment. After giving birth, your brain is too full of things to think about that you won’t be able to remember what movies you want to watch, what books you want to read, etc.

List down titles you want to read and/or watch beforehand, as well as other indulgences you desire, such as that electronic foot spa, etc. Having a list ready makes it easy for you to enjoy the precious few moments you have for yourself.
