How to Keep Skin Youthful

Your skin is smooth and glowing, even if don't get enough sleep, eat healthy and use skin care products. As you get older, maintaining that youthful glow requires a more work.

To keep your youthful complexion, be willing to commit your time and effort in caring for your skin. Lucky for us, there are tons and tons of beauty and skin care products available in the market. However, with so much to choose it’s difficult to know just what you need. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Repair your skin

When we are young, the epidermis, the top layer of the skin protects us from damaging things like free-radicals. It also helps keep water in. By our mid-20s, the epidermis gets cracked from inflammation caused by sun exposure, pollution and dehydration.

The key here is to fill in these ‘cracks’ in the epidermis using products containing ceramides which is a synthetic form of lipids (lipids are a natural part of the skin) or borage seed oil (an omega-6 fatty acid).

Hydrate your skin

The skin needs lots of moisture to stay smooth, plump and elastic.

In your 20s, use an oil-free moisturizer once a day is enough. By the time you reach your 30s, up your application to twice a day, using a richer moisturize to make sure your skin is receiving enough moisture.

Fight Free Radicals

Free radicals damage the skin by destroying collagen – fibers that make your skin firm. To fight these free radicals, use products that contain antioxidants. Vitamins C and E and green tea are rich in antioxidants and are popular ingredients in skin care ingredients. Fortunately, today’s skin care products have updated formulations so that the skin receives more potent doses. 

Block UV rays

Sun exposure as the leading cause of collagen breakdown can’t be stressed enough. Regardless of whether you are 1 or 100, applying sunscreen should be a daily habit. Choose sunblocks that are broad or full-spectrum (meaning they shield skin from both UVA rays which cause aging and cancer, and UVB rays, that cause burning). Make a habit of applying sunscreen everyday after putting on an antioxidant product and moisturizer.

Rebuild lost collagen

When you were younger, the skin readily produces plenty of collagen that makes skin firm. By the time you are in your 30s, collagen starts to break and isn’t promptly replaced. At this point, you should start using a product containing vitamin A. You can choose prescription-strength products such as Retin-A, or over the counter products like Retinol. Add it to your nightly regimen, after applying your skin-repair product. 

Stress management

Just like the body slowing down when stressed, our skin also shows signs of slowing and breaking down when stressed. When the cortisol level in the skin is increased, the skin’s healing ability slows down, collagen breaks down faster and inflammation increases. Get enough sleep and exercise. To combat stress, eat antioxidant-rich foods such as green tea, leafy vegetables, and berries. 

Healthy diet for for youthful skin

It’s not enough to rely on skin-care products to make beautiful skin last longer. Eating nutritious foods does wonders not just for your skin but for your overall health. Just think, with skin-care products working on the outside and healthy foods working on the inside, you are sure to maintain that smooth and young-looking skin.

Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that eating antioxidant-rich foods like vitamins C and E, grape seed extract and cartenoids help maintain the firmness of the skin as you age.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids keep the skin supple and helps decrease blotchiness and reduce inflammation. They are even know to soothe skin conditions like rosacea. Salmon is one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. 

Olive oil

Olive oil can be applied either directly to the skin or used in food preparation. Either way it has a lot of benefits for your skin. Olive oil is also an excellent moisturizer when applied directly to the skin.


It has been found that topical glucosamine increased the production of hyaluronic acid after six weeks of application. The study also suggests that the skin will get the same benefit if glucosamine is taken as an oral supplement. Experts recommend a daily 1,500 mg dose.
