Sleep Disorders Among the Elderly

Sleep complication are usual among seniors. It may have something to do with illness or it may have solely to do with the changes of biological temporal rhythms-also know as circadian rhythm-of an aging adult individual.

Since the sleeping habits of a senior adult is different from that of a younger individual, the treatment, as well as the diagnosis, may be different.

However, this may not be a sign of a certain illness at all. It may be just because of the fact that they sleep an hour or two early and wake up an hour or two early as well.

In fact, this can be one of the major factors affecting their sleeping style. Hence, before using any sleeping aid, it’s best to check whether this has something to do with the aging adult’s sleeping patterns or complications.

Yet regardless of bedtime, an aging adult will still wake up the same time. This factor makes them sleepy in the morning. This type of sleeping schedule therefore ends up with them not having quality sleep.

In addition, even if they go to sleep at a later hour and wake up late, this does not improve their sleeping habits.

How to treat sleep disorders?

Light therapy can be recommended to senior adults whose sleeping disorders persist even until morning. But many adults do not like this treatment and their disorders, despite the changes in sleeping schedules, so other sleep aids can be recommended.

Seeking medical attention as early as possible can greatly help, especially at the beginning of a complication. Since sleep disorder is associated with complications regarding senior health, it can be resolved if the health disorder is treated.

The body’s circadian rhythm is related to aging and can be solved through quality sleep. But, light therapy as well as sleep aides is also advised in such a disorder.
