Natural Home Remedies for Halitosis

Bad breath is an annoying and embarrassing problem. So serious that it could potentially ruin your social and work life. And yes, a monstrous breath could also jam your romantic and sex life. If you flunked a "breath test", take heart. In addition to regular brushing and flossing of teeth, there are natural home remedies to vanquish those odor-causing bacteria that inhabit your teeth, tongue, and gums.

Stimulate your salivary gland

Bad breath is often caused by dry mouth. To prevent this, you should stimulate your salivary gland. Eat plenty of fruits rich in citric acid like oranges, pineapple, and grapefruits. Citric acid stimulates your salivary glands, encouraging the circulation of breath-freshening saliva. If fruits are not available, just eat whatever food in sight, except garlic, strong cheese (blue cheese, Roquefort, and Camembert), onions, or other breath-foulers.

Scrape your tongue

The bacteria on your tongue can ferment proteins and produce gases that smell really bad. To dislodge these bacteria, scrape your tongue using your teeth and rinse them away. You can also use a plastic or metal spoon as a tongue scraper. Do it gently and don’t push the scraper too far back so as not to activate gag reflex.

Loot the spice shelf

Spices can kill odor-causing bacteria on your mouth or at least mask the odor. Simply pop a clove into your mouth then dent it with your teeth. Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with antibacterial properties. Bite until the essence fills your mouth and spit it out. Chewing cardamom, dill, fennel, dill, or anise seeds can also kill the bacteria that cause beastly breath. Cinnamon is also an effective antiseptic.

Go with breath fresheners

Many brand-name products claiming to be effective breath-fresheners are in fact, rarely effective in preventing bad breath in the long run. But you can kill the odor-causing compounds using a therapeutic oral rinse, which you can buy over the Internet or at your local drugstore. Toothpaste that has tea-tree oil can disinfect your mouth. You can buy it in the pharmacy or health-food stores.

So there. You don’t want to be in an embarrassing situation. You don’t want to knock someone out with your bad breath. So make sure that you have a sweet breath all the time.
