We are always told to eat well and be healthy. But how are we supposed to do it when our schedule is so hectic that we are hardly ever home? This is a serious problem, especially in a McDonaldized society where people on the go are left devouring the most unhealthy food. Read on to know how you make healthy food choices when eating out.

Why splurging is dangerous

A burger once in a while will not harm you. Eating a not-so-healthy food occasionally is okay, just make sure that you balance it with healthier food choices. But if burger is all you eat, then prepare yourself with some health problems. It could lead to weight gain, even obesity. Obese people have higher risk of developing hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems.

Weight gain is not the only problem. Splurging on fast food can drag your body down in many other ways. Eating the wrong foods can affect your emotional well-being and mental functioning. Unhealthy foods can also drain your energy, weaken your body, and affect your future health.

So, how can you make smart food choices while eating out? Here are some helpful tips:

Balance is the key

When eating out, you should eat meals that have a balance of whole-grain breads, fruits and vegetables (potato chips and french fries do not qualify as veggies), and lean proteins such as chicken, fish, or beans if you are a vegetarian). So what is a healthy choice? An example is a turkey sandwich on whole wheat with tomato and lettuce. This meal is much better than a fast food cheeseburger on a white bun.

Be mindful of portion sizes

Watch portion sizes when eating out. Over the last few decades, the portion sizes of foods in America have significantly increased. In the 1950s, the average weight of a hamburger was only 1.5 ounces. Today, hamburgers weigh 8 ounces or more. This means that we are now consuming more food than we need.

Drink lots of water or go for low-fat milk

Most energy drinks, juices, and regular sodas contain "empty" calories that we do not need. In addition, these drinks are also packed with caffeine and other stuff. When eating out, drink a lot of water to cleanse your body. A healthy alternative is low-fat milk, which is rich in calcium for healthier and stronger bones.
