How to Make a Change in Your Life

When we were little, our parents made almost all the decisions for us. We were told how to eat properly, how to act, what to do in school, and when to go to bed. But as we age and begin taking charge of our lives, many of us want to make some changes – things like living a healthy life, being more environmentally aware, or doing better in school.

The easy part in changing your life is knowing the change that you want to make. However, the challenge is knowing how to make the change and sticking with it. Here are three steps to follow when making a major change in your life:

Step one

The first step is to take stock of the people, events, things, and activities that are currently part of your life. Then consider asking yourself these 5 questions: (1) Where am I heading with my life? (2) What do I want my life to look like in 5 years? (3) What really excites me? (4) What would I want to be pleased about this time next year? (5) What is the one thing that I need to accomplish this year to make my life generally better?

Step two

The second step is a tough one. In this phase, you will have to take a good look at your own life and be completely truthful with yourself about the things that you really want, where you like to go, and the person you want to be with wherever you go. Before going on to the next step, you should decide about what or who will you prioritize.

Step three

The third step involves putting together an action plan, which includes these things: the activity needed to make the change happen, the result, and by when. When writing your action plan, you should consider what you would do in order to proclaim to your family and friends, "I’m so proud to declare the beginning of ____________" or, "I fruitfully completed _________ this year."

Success in making a change in your life depends on you as you control the outcome. Whatever course you take is of your own choosing. You and you alone are responsible for your own success or failure.

You do not have to ask for anyone to change your life. You have the power to do it. Just remember that your experience, attitude, knowledge, skills, and talents are the most important assets you have. You should use them wisely.
