California One of the Most Polluted States

California seems to be heading nowhere when it comes to safeguarding the environment. The state is considered as one of the most polluted areas in the United States. When it comes to poor air quality, many areas in California seem to land on the top spots. Polluted air is considered to be a primary cause of health damage to millions of people in the country, according to the American Lung Association.

According to a recent "State Of the Air" report by the American Lung Association, three cities in California made it to the top five of the most polluted US cities list, both with particulate and ozone pollution. Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and Visalia, all three located in California, were the cities listed as among the five most polluted cities in the US, racking the highest numbers for particulate pollution as well as the areas plagued by the highest ozone pollution levels in the country.

Worst Particulate Pollution Cities

There were two categories for cities having the worst particulate pollution in the US. This is the type of pollution determined by the presence of particulates in the air. These particulates can cause lung inflammation and may lead to other respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.

The different cities were both considered for the worst short-term as well as the worst year-round particulate pollution and then were ranked accordingly. Among the top five of cities with the worst year round particulate pollution, three cities from California came out on top- Bakersfield (1st), Los Angeles (3rd) and Visalia (4th).  The other cities rounding up the top five included Pittsburg, Pennsylvania (2nd) and Birmingham, Alabama (5th).

Worst Ozone Pollution Cities

Ozone pollution has recently gone down among many US cities. Ozone pollution is created by car engine exhausts burning fossil fuel. Despite the strict enforcement of emission regulations, there are still many cities being considered as having too much ozone pollution.

The top five of the US cities with the worst ozone pollution once again included California cities. The top four spots were occupied by Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Visalia and Fresno, respectively. Houston, Texas rounded up the top five.
