MS Recovery Diet Principles

The MS Recovery Diet is developed by Ann Sawyer and Judi Bachrach. Both women suffered from Multiple Sclerosis for years.

Ann Sawyer found out about her condition in 1996. Come fall of 1997 she was barely functioning. Determined not to succumb to her disease, Sawyer looked everywhere and studied everything. Fortunately she discovered a way to recover from MS through diet. Three years later, she had regained full health, and felt obliged to inform other people who suffer from MS that the disease can be cured.

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis or MS is characterized as inflammatory disease where in the immune cells activated in blood stream pass through the blood-brain barrier and attacks the protective myelin sheaths that cover the nerves of the central nervous system; leaving the  characteristic lesions or sclerosis in its wake.

MS is also characterized as an autoimmune occurrence where in the nerve conduction is disrupted and damaged, leading to manifestations of various symptoms.

New discoveries indicate that this action is just a part of the entire disease process, and not the main cause for disabilities. A second course of the disease, undetected under normal appearing white and gray matter, which does not leave any traces and is ongoing from the onset, is the real cause of disability. This disease process is axonal apoptosis wherein the long fibers of the nerves or the axons die off (apoptosis) cause of which is unknown.

The lesions which have been the focus of the study for years as the basic process of the disease and as the target of medical intervention through drugs are actually not a identical occurrences but are actually four different types characterized by the presence of different kinds of cells.

Of the four types, 2 fit the old concept of an inflammatory occurrence wherein activated immune cells attack the myelin sheaths. The other two lesion types called oligodendrocytes, the cells the manufacture the myelin are thought to be either attacked by immune cells or another case of apoptosis.

The one consistent thing with MS is the breaching of the blood-brain barrier. This process leaves the central nervous system not inviolate anymore.

Recent studies on MS yielded raised more questions than answers. Even long held conjectures are found to be imprecise, thus explaining why drug therapies based on these hypotheses do not work. For the dietary approach, recent studies support and explain why many people with MS have been able to make startling recoveries just by changing what they eat.

The MS recovery diet

The tenets of the MS recovery diet are to stop the immune cells from being activated in the blood stream and keep the blood-brain barrier from being breached.

The diet works to halt the disease process that leads to the cascading events inside the central nervous system, resulting in symptoms. Once the disease process is arrested, the healing process of the body can begin, and full functioning can be restored.

This is achieved by preventing a person with MS from eating foods that encourage the disease process by both activating the immune cells and by causing the blood-brain barrier to be breached, allowing these cells to get inside the central nervous system.

MS-causing foods

Foods that fuel the MS disease process are saturated fats, foods that contain lectin (proteins that are often difficult for humans to digest and often toxic to some degree) and sugars. Each person has a unique sensitivity profile.

None of these three culprits have show themselves to be either necessary and/or sufficient to fuel the disease in all MS cases.
