Vitamin B-12 and Depression

The relationship between depression and low levels of vitamin B12 is not a secret. Doctors have long known about the link between the two. Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins such as folate, are crucial to the production of certain brain chemicals that are necessary in normalizing mood and other brain functions.

However, experts are still unsure whether vitamin B12 deficiency is the cause or the result of depression.

One cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is poor nutrition. But poor nutrition may also be caused by depression. People who are depressed may lose interest in eating, which in turn, may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.

Eating healthy

When you are depressed, it is necessary to try to eat a healthy diet that includes a wide variety of sources of nutrients, including B vitamins. Good sources of vitamin B12 are vitamin B-12 and depression fish, meat, poultry, eggs and milk. Fortified breakfast cereals are another good source of B-12 and other B vitamins.

People in their 50s – especially vegetarians – should take a daily supplement that contains vitamin B12 and other B vitamins to ensure that you are getting the nutrients you need. Ask your doctor about it.

When you talk to your doctor about your depression, remember to address any underlying physical conditions that may have a role in your depression, such as vitamin deficiency, thyroid disease and certain types of anemia. If you treat these underlying conditions, your mood may improve. If you treat these conditions but you are still depressed, your doctor may recommend treatments for depression such as antidepressants and counseling.
