Managing Common Pregnancy Problems

Morning sickness, diarrhea, heartburn, and constipation are some of the most common pregnancy problems.

Morning sickness

Morning sickness is a common pregnancy problem. To help calm your queasy stomach, eat small amounts of bland foods like crackers, cereal, or pretzels before getting out of bed. You may also snack on these bland foods, or eat small meals frequently throughout the day. Avoid eating fried, fatty, and greasy foods.

You may also try the following:

Take your prenatal vitamin before going to sleep or after eating, and not on an empty stomach.

Suck on hard candy.

Heartburn and gas

Some women get heartburn or gas from foods like broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower, which unfortunately, are good sources of nutrients. Plan a balanced diet to avoid these foods – and still get the nutrients you need to stay healthy, and for your baby to develop properly. Some women also get heartburn and gas from carbonated drinks, but others find that they calm the digestive system. You could also try drinking milk before eating.


Iron supplements may cause constipation in some women. To relieve this, add more fiber-rich foods in your diet [about 20 to 30 grams a day] such as fruits and vegetables. Also make sure to drink 8 glasses of water a day or your constipation will get worse. Hot tea, soups, and broth may work as well. Exercise is also a good way to prevent constipation. Your doctor may prescribe a stool softener, fiber tablets or drinks or other high-fiber products. Do not use laxatives, and avoid taking castor oil as it can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.


To prevent diarrhea, eat more foods that contain pectin and gum to help absorb excess water. Some foods that are rich in pectin and gum include pplesauce, bananas, white rice, oatmeal, and refined wheat bread.
