Foods That Help You Sleep Better

Everyone needs sleep. But not everyone seems to get it better than others. There are many people who seem to suffer from getting better sleep despite getting the right number of hours for it.

Quality sleep is usually better than the quantity of hours. Sleeping better can sometimes be done by eating the right type of foods. Here are some of which you can try in order for you to get better sleep from now on.

Complex Carbohydrates

Eating complex carbohydrates can actually help you sleep better at night. Eating whole grains and starches do this by making the body produce more serotonin. It is a chemical that helps calm the mind and regulate the brain’s waking and sleeping cycles. Eating complex carbohydrates for dinner such as potatoes, brown rice or whole wheat bread can help induce better sleep.

Vitamin B Rich Foods

Foods that are rich in vitamin B are also known to help you sleep better at night. Vitamin B6, thiamin and folic acid help regulate amino acids produced in the body such as tryptophan. This amino acid is needed to produce serotonin. B vitamins may also affect the action of melatonin, a compound believed to help regulate sleep patterns. Vitamin B rich foods include red lean meat, whole grains and beans.

Minerals such as magnesium, calcium and zinc may also help you sleep better. These minerals are essential for nerve stimulation as well as muscle relaxation. Zinc and magnesium may help reduce leg cramps which can make sleep become difficult for some people. Lack of magnesium can also cause anxiety which can make it difficult to sleep at night. Consuming foods rich in such minerals include green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, and whole grains.
