Health foods have become quite the craze among people who wish to take good care of their health. The sad thing about it is that, popularity seems to govern what types of health foods people may take. There are some that tend to be overlooked along the way. Here are some of them.


Celery is more commonly used as a garnish for other foods rather than being the main course in itself. People think that its crunch may be enjoyed little at a time and think it is composed mostly of water. And because of such, people tend to eat less of it. But most people may not know that celery is in fact quite nutritious too.

Celery is also rich in antioxidants that help in the fight against cancer. Eating around four or more sticks of celery a day can result in a substantial reduction in blood pressure levels. Phytochemicals found in celery helps relax the muscle tissue in the arterial walls help increase blood flow.


Many people would think twice of eating seaweed. But it has become an acceptable although still modest part of Western diet since Japanese staples such as sushi became popular fads. But little do people know of the health benefits provided by this often overlooked algae.

Seaweeds are packed with a bunch of nutrients that the human body would surely benefit from. It is a good source of plant-based calcium and loaded with potassium which is essential in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Eating more sushi with seaweed now may not only look fashionable for some but also become beneficial healthwise.


Lentils are considered to be a lesser known vegetable compared to others. This may be part of the reason why it is often overlooked as a health food. Lentils in fact do contain a lot of nutrients too. Every cup of the overlooked legume contains about 16 grams of plant fiber. They also contain 27 percent more folate per cup than a similar serving of spinach. Eating colored lentils even provide more benefits since they contain a bunch of disease fighting antioxidants.
