Understanding Your Food Cravings

Food cravings are quite common among people. Most of them would probably not notice it unless they are doing their best to lose weight. These cravings can sometimes make losing weight quite hard. Being able to better understand these food cravings would help you cope up with them the next time they come.

Craving For Salty Food

According to recent research, people who crave for mainly salty foods may be having mineral deficiencies. Studies show that women who follow a diet that is low in calcium are those who usually crave for salty foods.

One possible reason for this is that sodium in salt may trick the body by temporarily increasing the calcium levels in the blood, making the body think that it has enough calcium to go by. But the deficiency can also be other minerals too. Studies also have shown that animals lacking in minerals such as potassium and iron also tend to crave for salt.

Craving for Sweets

A sudden craving for sweets may be due to a number of factors. One is that the body maybe low on energy that it sends cravings for sweets. Refined sugars found in candies are known to be easily absorbed by the body faster than any other type of food, giving it an instant boost of energy. A craving for sweets may also be looking to boost up their moods since sweets like chocolates can provide a "high" because it can stimulate the body to release more serotonin, one of the body’s feel good hormones.

Craving For Spicy Foods

The body seems to crave for spicy foods when it has trouble cooling down. The spices can induce the body to perspire and therefore achieve a cool down. But researchers also believe that the body accustomed to spicy food may crave for more because it may have become addicted to the rush that eating spicy foods may bring. It can cause a spike in blood pressure, accelerated heart rates and rapid breathing.
