Types of Nervous Habits

Nervous habits affect many people and it may have some damaging consequences. There are some compulsions that people seem to do when they either feel nervous, stressed or anxious. They are certain actions that people have grown accustomed to doing over the years and have become a nervous habit.

Common Types

There are various types of nervous habits that many people seem to be guilty of. They are common compulsions that are attributed to nervousness and anxiety in people. Here are some of the different types:

Nail-biting. Nail biting is considered to be the most common nervous habit. The compulsion to bite one’s nails affects one third of young children, 44 percent of teens and about 19 to 29 percent of adults. This habit may stem from the self-soothing effects putting things in the mouth that some people never seem to grow out of through the years.

Thumb-sucking. Another common nervous habit that stem from childhood, thumb sucking may be borne out of the impulse of babies to suck anything in their mouths for comfort. While most children eventually outgrow this habit, some people may be found to have this nervous habit way until their teens as well as during adulthood.

Overeating. This is a nervous habit that may develop at any period in one’s life. It may not necessarily be a habit that some adults never outgrew during childhood. Some people may develop overeating as a nervous habit in their teen or in adulthood. It is usually characterized by the compulsion to eat when one feels stressed, anxious or feeling frustrated. Some people tend to gravitate towards food for comfort since some foods are known to promote feelings of happiness.

Smoking. More than just a nervous habit, smoking can eventually reverse the situation by actually causing the anxiety and stress rather than trying to alleviate it. This can happen when smokers become addicted to nicotine. Nicotine can bring changes in the levels of brain chemicals that may eventually affect how it functions and feelings of calm and pleasure. At a certain point, people then try to crave for such instances that lead them to develop the smoking habit.
