Stroke has become one of the leading causes of death among people living in developed countries nowadays. Credit this to increased stress and a more hectic lifestyle being followed as the new norm. Stroke may also be preventable in most cases since there are several risk factors that people may be able to control. Here are some of them.

Cholesterol Levels

One of the major risk factors associated with stroke is high cholesterol. High cholesterol levels can lead to the hardening of the arteries which causes coronary artery disease and increases the risk of a stroke. You may be able to have better control over your cholesterol levels by following a healthier, low-cholesterol diet.


High blood pressure is the second most important risk factor when it comes to stroke. Yet it is also one of the factors that can be controlled. It may just be a matter of following a healthier lifestyle composed of regular exercise and diet, especially during the early years, that may help control it.


Smoking is another risk factor for stroke. Although smoking can be quite hard to stop once it becomes a habit, it is something that can be controlled nonetheless. Never starting the habit at all in the first place can eliminate such a risk.

Weight Issues

Excess body weight is also a known risk factor for stroke. It is something that one can avoid by following a regular exercise program and a healthy diet to maintain a more ideal weight level.

Salt Intake

Too much salt in one’s diet may also increase stroke risk. An ideal diet must have less than 2,300 mg of salt content per day. Higher than that may already be too much and may have an effect on stroke risk after a period of time.
