Vitamin B Intake Lowers A Person’s Stroke Risk

shutterstock_37090774There is a study that suggests taking vitamin B supplements may help lower your stroke risk. The researchers from Zhengzhou University in China conducted an analysis of data from 14 randomized clinical trials. The data analyzed covered a total of 54,913 participants all in all.

The researchers analyzed the effects of vitamin B compared to a placebo or a very low-dose B vitamin. The participants were also followed up for a minimum of six months. During the course of the studies, 2,471 cases of strokes were recorded. Based on the data analyzed, vitamin B was able to lower the stroke risk by as much as seven percent.

According to Xu Yuming of Zhengzhou University, “Previous studies have conflicting findings regarding the use of vitamin B supplements and stroke or heart attack. Some studies have even suggested that the supplements may increase the risk of these events.”

Despite the new findings regarding vitamin B, the researchers are also keen to say that taking vitamin B supplements does not in any way affect the severity of strokes or the risk of death as a result of stroke. In addition, folic acid, according to the researchers appear to reduce the effect of vitamin B. Taking vitamin B12 did not indicate a lower stroke risk.

Yuming further stated, ” “Based on our results, the ability of vitamin B to reduce stroke risk may be influenced by a number of other factors such as the body’s absorption rate, the amount of folic acid or vitamin B12 concentration in the blood, and whether a person has kidney disease or high blood pressure.” The researchers recommend talking to medical experts and professionals when it comes to taking supplements.
