Babies Taking Antibiotics Have Higher Risk of Developing Food Allergies 

portrait of a toddlerAntibiotics have been quite important in trying to help eradicate some of the epidemic-causing diseases of the world.  They have been quite effective in treating a number of infections that has allowed to recover and survive what may have been fatal conditions in the past. But the use of antibiotics has also its downsides. Careless use of antibiotics has led to the increase in antibiotic-resistant organisms that are more and more difficult to treat. The use of antibiotics can even have a negative effect on certain health conditions. A recent study on babies taking antibiotics indicates that it can bring about the higher likelihood that they will develop food allergies later on.

Researchers from the University of South Carolina found out that children who were prescribed with antibiotics within their first year also were 1.21 times more likely to develop food allergies compared to children who had not taken any antibiotic during the same age period. The researchers note that the more antibiotics the babies took, the higher were their risk of developing food allergies. The risk increased to 1.31 for kids who were given three prescriptions. The risk further increased to 1.43 times for kids who had four prescriptions while the risk rose to 1.64 for kids who were given five or more antibiotic prescriptions.

A baby’s development during the early formative years include developing the body’s tolerance to substances and compounds. The findings indicate that antibiotics may disrupt the development of tolerance for different types of food that can lead to babies developing related allergies instead. The researchers suggest that better diagnostic methods should be employed before prescribing antibiotics to babies since it may have an effect on certain areas of development such as building tolerance for certain types of food.
