High blood pressure commonly affects millions of people worldwide. It can lead to several health complications. Over time, the pressure affects the artery walls that can eventually lead to other health problems such as heart disease. A number of risk factors can be associated with high blood pressure. Excess Weight

Body weight is a major factor whether a person may suffer from high blood pressure. Obesity and excess weight can contribute to increasing your blood pressure. The more a person weighs, the harder the heart works in order to bring oxygen and nutrients through the blood vessels. This can put added pressure in the arterial walls as well.

Type Of Activity Level

The level of physical activity you do regularly can also be a factor in your blood pressure level. Exercise, or lack of it can determine if you develop high blood pressure over time. A sedentary lifestyle can cause your heart muscles to weaken. Lack of physical activity can leave your heart as well as the blood vessels avoid getting stronger as a result of the pressure that regular physical activity provides. Over time, the heart starts to work harder just to let blood circulate as the blood vessels start to harden as you age. This contributes to high blood pressure.

But when you perform regular exercise, you continue to help your heart grow stronger by allowing it to pump more blood during each beat. It also helps keep the blood vessels and arteries become more elastic as well. While exercise may temporarily increase blood pressure as the heart pumps more blood to your muscles, it will not do too much harm as the blood vessels in the muscles also start to dilate when you exercise in order to receive the incoming blood for energy.

Progressing Age

Age is also a major factor in blood pressure levels. People have an increasing risk of developing high blood pressure as they advance in age. Part of the reason is because of natural regression of the body as it ages. The body starts to slow down its cellular growth and development as it grows old. The muscle cells in the heart start to degenerate after years and years of function. Aging can also cause the thickening of the cellular walls of the arteries, making them less elastic over time. A weakening heart muscle and hardening of the arteries can work together to cause your blood pressure to rise as you age.
