Having a healthy home means trying to follow proper hygienic practices. But there are times when people are unaware that certain tasks they are accustomed to doing all the time are actually not healthy. In the kitchen, many people can be guilty of committing certain mistakes that may have an effect on overall health and hygiene. Here are just some of them.

Failure To Sanitize The Washing Sponge

Many people generally think that the washing sponge may be clean since it is always being used to clean dishes and other kitchen utensils. But there is a great chance that your washing sponge may actually be filled with toxic pathogens. One possible reason is that some food debris may get trapped inside the sponge, which may cause bacteria to grow. You can sanitize your sponge by either putting it on the dishwasher along with the dishes once in a while or by squeezing the water from it and them put it in the microwave for one minute. If your sponge starts to have that musty smell, then it is time to replace it with a new one.

Storing Eggs And Milk On The Fridge Door

Most people are accustomed to storing eggs on the shelves of the fridge. After all, the door shelves are usually designed to hold eggs. But it may not be the most ideal area. Not all areas of the fridge door are consistently cold. It is in these areas where there is the highest chance of bacteria developing. While it may be convenient to store eggs or milk there, it can be a big mistake health wise. Try to store them on the bottom shelf and not the door since the temperature tends to fluctuate upon frequent opening and closing.

Storing Leftovers For Long Periods

Storing leftover food inside the fridge does not necessarily mean that you can just leave them there for a long time. Any food can start to go bad over time. You need to know when it is okay to store leftovers and for how long. For this, you should always bear in mind the 2-2-4 rule. You need to refrigerate food within two hours of cooking, store them in two-inch deep containers for faster chilling, and then eat leftover food in the fridge within four days. If in case you have leftover food that you can’t consume within this time period, try to freeze them instead.
